- - Construction industry raised $578,000 in a charity drive for the President's Challenge
- BCA Green Mark Champion Award conferred to Ascendas, CapitaLand Group and National University of Singapore for their strong commitment towards corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability

Singapore, 24 May 2012 - Singapore's construction sector congregated at the BCA Awards event to celebrate its sterling achievements and contributions to the built environment. More than 2,200 guests attended the ceremony, including Guest-of-Honour President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Minister of State (MOS) for Trade and Industry and National Development Mr Lee Yi Shyan. A total of 318 BCA Awards were given out this year, compared to 261 last year. The increase is due to higher construction standards and more Green Mark Awards this year.

For the first time, a charity drive was held in conjunction with the BCA Awards, with $578,000 of donations going to beneficiaries of the President's Challenge 2012. This is BCA's largest charity drive involving the industry, including partnership with the Singapore Structural Steel Society to organise a charity golf event in June. BCA's Deputy Chairman Mr Lee Chuan Seng presented the donation cheque to Dr Tony Tan on behalf of the construction industry.

"The motivation behind the BCA Awards charity drive is to call on firms in the construction and real estate industry to give back to society as part of their corporate social responsibility. While the industry continues to raise its standards and improves the working conditions on site, it is important for everyone in the industry to care for our environment and our community, especially the less fortunate", said Dr John Keung, CEO of BCA.

Three BCA Green Mark Champion Awards conferred this year

This year, Ascendas, CapitaLand Group and National University of Singapore were conferred the Green Mark Champion Award for their strong commitment towards environmental sustainability. To qualify for the award, they each delivered at least ten Green Mark projects of Gold or higher rating, including a minimum of three Green Mark Platinum projects and three Green Mark GoldPlus projects respectively.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is the first educational institution to be awarded the Green Mark Champion Award. The university advances sustainability by incorporating innovative environmental strategies into its building developments on campus, and adopts a sustainable life cycle approach to facilities management. It also educates staff and students to be more environmentally-responsible.

Ascendas, a business space solutions provider, also plays an active role to ensure that its business spaces are energy efficient and environmentally-friendly, starting from the design of buildings to their maintenance and operations.

In addition, CapitaLand embraces environmental sustainability through a community engagement programme to encourage its stakeholders and the public to play a role in protecting the environment. It also targets to achieve a minimum Green Mark GoldPlus rating for all its projects in Singapore.

Including the Green Mark Champion Awards, the number of Green Mark Awards increased from 164 last year to 205 this year (refer to Annex B). More developers and building owners are coming onboard to green their buildings, as they recognise the growing importance of green and sustainable developments to their business and environment.

In May 2012, there are more than 1,180 green buildings in Singapore, with a total gross floor area of about 37 million square metres or 16% of the total estimated existing building floor space.

Public sector organisation receives Built Environment Leadership Platinum Award for the first time

This year, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) was conferred the Built Environment Leadership Platinum Award, the highest accolade for demonstrating excellence and leadership in shaping a safe, high quality, sustainable and friendly built environment in Singapore. This is the first time a public sector organisation is awarded the Built Environment Leadership Platinum Award since the Award was introduced in 2009.

Besides achieving multiple BCA Awards, including the Green Mark Champion Award, Construction Excellence Awards, Construction Productivity Awards and Universal Design Awards, HDB won numerous other local and international awards.

HDB's CEO, Dr. Cheong Koon Hean said, "HDB is honoured to receive the Built Environment Leadership Platinum Award and other awards. As the largest developer in Singapore, we have been striving over the years to develop world-class public housing. In October 2011, we introduced the 'Roadmap to Better Living in HDB Towns', a strategic plan that guides HDB to deliver a better living environment for our residents. This award is a great encouragement to us, and we will continue to focus on the three thrusts of our Roadmap - building well-designed, sustainable, and community-centric towns."

Shimizu Corporation was also accorded the Gold Class status for this year's Built Environment Leadership Award.

Awards were also given for categories such as construction excellence, design and engineering safety excellence, universal design, construction productivity, green building individual and green and gracious builder at the ceremony.
