The Building and Construction Authority's statement on the fire at East Village Hotel construction site

Monday, 16 July 2012

Singapore, 16 July 2012 - The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) was alerted to a fire that had occurred at the construction site of East Village Hotel at 25 Marine Parade. BCA sent our engineers to the site and found that there was a fire outbreak at the single-storey Annex building (with two basements) of the hotel. The entire Annex building was undergoing Additions & Alteration (A&A) works and was not occupied.

BCA engineers found some damage to the Basement 1 supporting structures as well as some concrete spalling on the existing Annex building structure.

BCA revoked the construction permit and has instructed the Qualified Person (QP) of the project to carry out a thorough investigation of both Annex building and the main hotel building. There was no damage to the main hotel building. BCA will only lift the revocation of the permit after the Qualified Person has investigated and certified that the site of the A&A works at the Annex building is safe for construction to resume.

* The Qualified Person is the Professional Engineer who is in charge of the A&A works.
