Popular For Dummies® guide provides tips to firms on how to achieve BCA Green Mark certification for office interiors

Singapore, 13 September 2013 - Environment-conscious firms who are keen on greening their offices but don't know how, can now refer to tips from the BCA Green Mark for Office Interiors For Dummies®. The popular For Dummies® guide was launched today by Mr Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information, at the latest BCA Green Building Exhibition held at Funan DigitaLife Mall.

The guidebook is a joint effort between the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and Wiley, publisher of the popular For Dummies® series of guidebooks. The special edition 40-page book offers comprehensive information on how offices can go about greening their offices to achieve the BCA Green Mark for Office Interior certification. The guide contains useful information on the assessment criteria, requirements, as well as certification process.

In the fight against climate change, office buildings make a big impact. Owners of multi-tenanted buildings may not always be able to control the way individual tenanted spaces are operated and maintained. Hence there is a need to raise the awareness of occupants and firms on sustainable practices as their behaviour will have a direct impact on energy consumption. The BCA Green Mark for Office Interiors For Dummies® will serve as an educational tool in creating stronger user awareness. A green office has multiple benefits, which includes not just utility savings, but also physical benefits for workers. Studies also showed that having a 'green' office can help boost worker productivity through a more comfortable and conducive work environment. The guidebook will serve to share with users the benefits of greening their offices, and equip them with the know-how to go green.

"Our For Dummies® brand is focused on making everything easier and we are delighted to partner with BCA in producing this first-ever guide. We hope readers will find it useful and be inspired by the case studies. We're deeply honoured that BCA has also included Wiley as a case study; last year, we received the BCA Green Mark GoldPLUS award for the extensive use of green features in our headquarters at Solaris," said Erik Thrasher, General Manager & Marketing Director, Professional Development Asia, Wiley. Some of these features include the extensive use of energy-efficient T5 lighting which is timer-set to operate during office hours; the indoor temperature being set at 24 degrees Celsius; and the air filters deployed in pantry areas to minimise smell and other pollutants.

Dr John Keung, Chief Executive Officer of BCA added, "Everyone has a role to play in saving Mother Earth, and awareness is key in helping us realise this goal. As such, BCA is constantly on the lookout for new engagement platforms to educate the public and urge them to join us in our green building efforts. The BCA Green Mark for Office Interiors For Dummies® is one such avenue that will complement the wide range of outreach activities we have. I hope that the guidebook will be able to inspire more to come onboard the Green Mark for Office Interiors scheme." BCA recently launched the "Tour of Green Mark Offices" for senior and mid-management executives and CSR personnel to take them through the process of how a green office is planned. A series of talks are also in place to promote environmental sustainability for office tenants. The For Dummies® guide will be distributed to these participants.

Another outreach platform that BCA used to raise awareness of green buildings is the Green Shots Photography Competition. This year's competition, organised jointly with the Photographic Society of Singapore, attracted about 2,000 entries, where photo enthusiasts submitted entries depicting human interaction around a BCA Green Mark building. The winning entries are displayed at the BCA's Green Building Exhibition at Funan DigitaLife Mall from 13 to 15 September.
