Government measures to mitigate granite supply disruption

Tuesday, 4 February 2014

Singapore, 4 February 2014 - There is a temporary disruption in the supply of granite from Indonesia. As the construction industry has diversified its sources of granite since 2007, many projects are still getting the supply from other sources. To mitigate the impact on existing construction projects, BCA is facilitating the importers and other stakeholders in the industry to ramp up supply from these diversified sources.

To further ease the situation and enable construction works to carry on, the Government will activate the release of the national granite stockpile from 5 February 2014 to main contractors who have on-going projects that require granite for concreting works. BCA has briefed the various industry groups1 (CIJC, RMCA) on the stockpile release.

The release of the national stockpile will tide the industry over while it ramps up supply from other regional sources. BCA urges the industry to continue to diligently look for alternative sources and diversify.

1The Construction Industry Joint Committee (CIJC) is made up eight industry associations comprising developers, architects, engineers, contractors, quantity surveyors and project managers; RMCA - Ready-Mixed Concrete Association.
