- Inaugural BCA Green Mark plaque awarded at green building exhibition
Singapore, 5 September 2014 - Tenants and visitors will soon be able to identify green buildings with the display of the BCA Green Mark plaque on building entrances, lobbies and atriums of buildings. Today, eight such building owners and developers who are also BCA Green Mark champions received the customised glass plaque commissioned by BCA from Ms Denise Phua, Mayor of Central Singapore, District Mayor, at BCA's green building exhibition at Bugis+.
Ascendas, CDL, NTU, NUS and Keppel Land are some of the eight building owners with projects with the highest green building standards. [See Annex A for building owners and projects]. Also known as BCA Green Mark Champions, these developers have a strong commitment towards corporate social responsibility and outstanding achievements in environmental sustainability, having achieved a substantial number of Green Mark buildings at Gold level and higher. As of 1 July 2014, projects undertaken by the Green Mark Champions represent 13 percent of all Green Mark projects and 37 percent of Green Mark Platinum projects.
"The plaque was introduced to recognise the developer's achievement in building and operating a sustainable property, and also to showcase the achievement to users and visitors. Tenants, users and visitors will now be able to identify that they are at the premises of a building owner or developer who has invested resources to green the building. The beneficiaries of these initiatives are also the users and they are able to experience sustainable and quality living." said Dr John Keung, CEO, BCA.
Professor Yong Kwet Yew, NUS Vice President (Campus Infrastructure) said, "We are honoured and encouraged to receive this award in recognition for the University's efforts in championing sustainable development. As a leading university, we continually strive to develop excellent campus infrastructure that supports the needs of the NUS community. At the same time, we place great emphasis on making our campus more environmentally friendly. The Award will serve as a constant reminder to the NUS community and visitors to our green buildings about the importance of being environmentally responsible."
Sculpted by glass artist, Ms Barbara Jane Cowie, the Green Mark plaque is moulded from recycled glass, with text sandblasted on the glass surface. Building projects that have completed verification through the BCA Green Mark Verification Audit will be eligible to display a plaque reflecting their BCA Green Mark Rating and the year of Award. The plaques can be purchased from BCA's authorised supplier who will produce the plaque.
Mr Tan Swee Yiow, President (Singapore), Keppel Land, said, "Keppel Land is committed to high standards of environmental protection. The BCA Green Mark Plaque, awarded to Ocean Financial Centre, recognises our efforts to develop properties that harmonise with the environment as well as enhance the well-being of the community. Optimising a building's environmental performance is a shared responsibility with tenants. Besides engaging and educating them with our Green Fit-Out and Green Office Operation Guides, we have formed a Tenants Go-Green Committee, comprising representatives from our various commercial buildings. Alongside other initiatives, including complimentary environmental gap analysis for tenants in our commercial buildings, we aim to raise eco awareness and encourage more stakeholders to join Keppel Land in our green journey."
