A Day in the Life of A Civil & Structural Engineer

By BCA

Civil and Structural engineers often work behind the scenes, ensuring that the buildings and infrastructure we use daily are safe, efficient, and functional. Rabia Al Adawia, a Senior Civil and Structural Engineer at CPG Consultants (a subsidiary of CPG Corporation), exemplifies the dedication and creativity required in this field. From designing resilient structures to troubleshooting construction challenges, Rabia's work influences how we live, work, and play.

As an engineer, her role extends far beyond design calculations; it starts with conceptualising structural schemes in collaboration with architects. Once the architectural layout of a project is confirmed, Rabia works closely with the multi-disciplinary teams and clients to develop the most suitable structural system, considering factors such as cost, materiality, constructability, and performance. She then proceeds to create a detailed structural design, ensuring that every element meets safety, durability, and efficiency requirements.

Rabia starts her day by ensuring her project timelines are on track. The fast-paced and detail-oriented nature of engineering means prioritising work efficiently. Using technology to aid her daily work helps to achieve this efficiency. Much of her job involves applying engineering principles and using advanced design software to create robust structures. Rabia shares how technology, such as Autodesk Construction Cloud, has enhanced productivity by streamlining workflows and hence improves collaboration. These tools help her team work smarter, ensuring that every project is delivered on time and meets quality and safety standards.

Her responsibilities also include preparing tender documents, evaluating contractor bids, and ensuring the selected proposal aligns with the project's technical and financial objectives. During construction, she liaises closely with contractors to address technical challenges, monitor project progress, ensure compliance with design specifications, and, above all, uphold safety standards on site.

Navigating regulatory approvals is another critical aspect of her work. Rabia coordinates submissions to various government agencies. Each submission requires thorough planning and collaboration to meet regulatory standards and project timelines.

Creativity in Action: Overcoming Construction Challenges

Creativity is an often overlooked aspect of engineering. Rabia demonstrated this when a steel connection was misaligned during the construction of a school project. Rather than delaying the project, she initiated a discussion with the contractor to introduce a bolted splice plate, maintaining structural integrity while avoiding costly delays. This innovative problem-solving approach underscores how adaptability and creativity are crucial for engineers.

Rabia acknowledges that engineering is a collaborative profession. When challenges arise, she develops solutions independently before seeking advice from experienced colleagues. This blend of independent thought and teamwork ensures that the best outcomes are achieved for clients.

Making a Lasting Impact: Driving Sustainability

Rabia's work extends beyond structural safety. She contributes to the sustainable development of Singapore's built environment by promoting low-carbon designs and reducing construction waste. At CPG, Rabia is part of a team that advocates for decarbonisation throughout a building's lifecycle. CPG’s publication, "Embodying Sustainability – A Decarbonisation Playbook for the Built Environment," provides a framework for reducing embodied carbon emissions and supporting clients in setting ambitious carbon reduction targets.

Her efforts contribute to a greener future, aligning with Singapore's national sustainability goals. Rabia finds immense satisfaction in seeing the tangible results of her work, such as visiting completed projects and witnessing people benefiting from the spaces she helped create.

Rabia's story reminds us of the profound impact civil and structural engineers have on our daily lives. Her passion for her work, combined with a growth mindset and resilience, sets an inspiring example for those considering a career in engineering. As technology evolves, Rabia is excited to adapt and innovate, proving that the built environment sector is dynamic and rewarding.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) champions the development and transformation of the built environment sector, in order to improve Singapore’s living environment. BCA oversees areas such as safety, quality, inclusiveness, sustainability and productivity, all of which, together with our stakeholders and partners, help to achieve our mission to transform the Built Environment sector and shape a liveable and smart built environment for Singapore.
