A Day in the Life of an Architect

31 Jan 2025

By BCA

For Junlin Ong, Associate Director at RSP Architects Planners and Engineers, architecture is more than just a profession; it's a passion deeply rooted in her childhood. Growing up, her family's weekend drives past the striking Golden Mile Complex sparked a fascination that led her to pursue a career in architecture. "It wasn't just the design that captivated me but how all the elements came together to create something functional and beautiful," she shares.

Fast-forward to today, Junlin's day begins with a cup of coffee and a plan. Mapping out her tasks helps her stay focused as she navigates a dynamic blend of responsibilities. From internal meetings to site discussions, every moment is an opportunity to ensure projects align with their vision and goals. "It's all about balancing collaboration, problem-solving, and driving progress forward," she explains.

Overcoming Challenges with Creativity

Her role has plenty of challenges, but Junlin thrives on finding solutions. Whether it's handling on-site coordination issues, value engineering during tender periods, or navigating tight budgets and regulatory approvals, she approaches every problem with creativity and resilience. One memorable project, One Pearl Bank, is a testament to her team's ability to adapt and innovate. Completed after six years, the iconic development overcame hurdles like COVID-19 disruptions and construction complexities. "Seeing it stand tall on the skyline is incredibly fulfilling," she reflects.

A Day Unlike Any Other

For Junlin, no two days are alike. "What makes my day unique is the variety of people I collaborate with, from contractors on-site to designers in the office," she says. This diversity keeps her work exciting and provides fresh perspectives that shape her projects. One highlight of her recent work is the pilot virtual Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP) inspection process for One Pearl Bank. Leveraging 360 Capture technology in collaboration with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) is a groundbreaking step for the industry.

What Drives Her Forward

Junlin's favourite part of her job is the endless learning opportunities. Each project offers a chance to explore new techniques, understand complex challenges, and grow professionally. When asked about her vision for the future of the built environment sector, she lights up.  "Locally, the Greater Southern Waterfront development, and the future Long Island project along off East Coast Park will redefine how nature and community will be integrated into urban living," she shares. Globally, the rise of AI in architecture excites her. "AI isn't just about efficiency; it's about sparking new ideas and tackling challenges like climate change more intelligently," she explains.

After a long day, Junlin finds inspiration in watching travel videos featuring unique architecture. "It's a way to unwind while staying curious about the world," she says. With every design she creates Junlin shapes not just buildings but also the communities they serve. Her story reminds us of the impact architecture has on our cities and lives.
