Sustainable Construction

Through sustainable development, we can reduce both the impact on our limited landfill capacity and dependence on imported construction materials.

Ways to use less natural aggregates

  • Recycling, upcycling and use of recycled materials
  • Efficient use of natural materials through lower concrete usage

Advantages of sustainable construction

Besides being better for the environment and enhancing supply resilience, there may be many other advantages of choosing sustainable construction such as improved productivity, site conditions and more.

Wet Concrete-based construction Sustainable construction (steel and other dry construction)
Cost Slightly less costly Increases overall construction cost by 2 to 3%
Speed Takes more time due to formwork, reinforcement work, concrete strengthening and removal of formwork Takes less time, especially when using steel construction
Manpower saving Labour intensive Up to 30% less labour usage
Quality Dependant on skill of workers, so re-work and rectifications are more common Better quality as components are factory-fabricated and standardised, with less dependence on workers’ skills
Sustainability Concrete using Portland-based cement is pollutive; almost 1 ton of CO2 is released to the atmosphere for every ton of cement produced. Steel elements are highly recyclable – over 50% of steel is currently produced from scrap
Weight Heavier Steel has a higher strength-to-weight ratio, so a lighter foundation is needed
