Box Culvert

The following building works are considered insignificant building works:

1.   Building works carried out for or in connection with —

(h)   any box culvert with a span not exceeding 5,000 millimetres, including any associated earth retaining structure, if —

(i)    the depth of the box culvert, as measured from the ground to the soffit of the base of the box culvert, does not exceed 1,500 millimetres; or

(ii)    the following conditions are met:

(A)    the depth of the box culvert, as measured from the ground to the soffit of the base of the box culvert, exceeds 1,500 millimetres but does not exceed 2,500 millimetres;

(B)    the distance between each point of the box culvert and any adjacent building or slope is at least 2 times the depth of the box culvert as mentioned in sub-paragraph (A).

Canal / Drain

The following building works are considered insignificant building works:

1.   Building works carried out for or in connection with —

(g)   any canal or drain, including any associated earth retaining structure, if —

(i)    the depth of the canal or drain, as measured from the ground to the soffit of the base of the canal or drain, does not exceed 1,500 millimetres; or

(ii)    the following conditions are met:

(A)    the depth of the canal or drain, as measured from the ground to the soffit of the base of the canal or drain, exceeds 1,500 millimetres but does not exceed 2,500 millimetres;

(B)    the distance between each point of the canal or drain and any adjacent building or slope is at least 2 times the depth of the canal or drain as mentioned in sub-paragraph (A).

Earth Retaining Structure for Excavation

The following building works are considered insignificant building works:

1.   Building works carried out for or in connection with —

(r)   any retaining wall or earth retaining structure for supporting the face of an excavation made for the purpose of constructing any pile cap, footing, sump, lift pit or trench, provided that the size of the pile cap, footing, sump, lift pit or trench does not exceed 10 square metres in area and 2 metres in depth.

The “area” refers to the floor area of the flat ground at the base of the excavation, excluding the inclined face of the slope.

Excavation / Site Formation

The following building works are considered insignificant building works:

1.   Building works carried out for or in connection with —

(a)   site formation works involving any excavation or filling not exceeding 1,500 millimetres in depth or height.

Pipe Rack

The following building works are considered insignificant building works:

1.   Building works carried out for or in connection with —

(j)   any pipe rack or support not exceeding 2,000 millimetres in height.

Plinth

The following building works are considered insignificant building works:

1.   Building works carried out for or in connection with —

(m)   any plinth, platform or other base not supported by piled foundation, erected for the purpose of supporting any mechanical plant, tank, equipment, machinery or other components (other than a building) not exceeding 2,500 millimetres in height.

Retaining Wall Structure

The following building works are considered insignificant building works:

1.   Building works carried out for or in connection with —

(q)   any retaining wall or earth retaining structure that is constructed with structural steel or reinforced concrete and with a visible height of not more than 1,500 millimetres, or any other retaining wall or earth retaining structure with a visible height of not more than 1,000 millimetres.

Temporary Decking

The following building works are considered insignificant building works:

1.   Building works carried out for or in connection with —

(fd)   temporary decking over any trench, where such decking is not accessible to the public or has a width not exceeding 3,000 millimetres.

Trench / Manhole / Shaft / Tunnel for the Purpose of Laying Pipes

The following building works are considered insignificant building works:

1.   Building works carried out for or in connection with —

(b)   any shaft, manhole, trench or tunnel for the purpose of laying sewer, water or other utility pipes, where the pipe does not exceed 1,000 millimetres in internal diameter, and where the building works are not located within the site of other building works that are not specified in this Schedule.

The submission of plans to BCA will be required if the shaft, manhole or tunnel is located within a construction site with building works that require building approval from the authority.

Underground Vault

The following building works are considered insignificant building works:

1.   Building works carried out for or in connection with —

(l)   any concrete or brick vault used for housing tanks located under the ground at a depth not exceeding 1,500 millimetres.
