Lift and Escalator Safety

With our high-rise landscape, lifts and escalators have become an essential part of our daily lives. Did you know that there are more than 70,000 passenger lifts and 7,000 escalators in Singapore? As users of these lifts and escalators, there are ‘dos and don’ts’ that we can observe to ensure safe usage. Let’s play our part to ensure safe usage of our lifts and escalators.

Who is responsible?

Keeping our lifts and escalators safe is a responsibility shared by users, lift and escalator owners, as well as contractors. As a lift and escalator user, you can observe the ‘dos and don’ts’ for safe usage of lift and escalator usage through the posters and videos below.

You may click on the posters to download them.

Report lift or escalator malfunctions

Should you encounter any lift or escalator malfunctions, do your part by reporting to the lift or escalator owner (including Town Councils) or their managing agent immediately.

If you are trapped in the lift, do not panic and follow these steps:

  1. Press the alarm button and wait for help to arrive.
  2. Do not try to pry open the lift doors.
  3. Use the emergency number in the lift to report the lift malfunction.
