The GBIC Energy Efficiency Research & Development (GBIC-R&D) funds collaboration to develop and test-bed innovative building energy efficient solutions. This is achieved through grant calls.
1st GBIC R&D Grant Call
GBIC launched the 1st GBIC R&D Grant Call on 9 July 2015. This inaugural grant call on the development of smart and energy efficient technology and solutions for buildings in the tropics resulted in the award of eight R&D projects in July 2016.

2nd GBIC R&D Grant Call
The 2nd GBIC R&D Grant Call was launched in May 2018. This grant call acts as an Innovation Challenge Call for Advancing Net Zero through Smart Building Technologies. It puts greater emphasis on smart and novel green building technologies that are close to market adoption, encourages industry’s participation in co-innovation and drives R&D solutions towards commercialisation.
Eight projects were awarded in January 2019. Out of the eight projects, six are to be led by industry firms including local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and Multinational Corporations (MNCs) with capabilities and track records to bring the technologies to market. All the technologies will be demonstrated in an operational environment in actual buildings.
